Girls Day

Zlín 13. 4. 2023 – The Regional Chamber of Commerce of the Zlín Region, together with the Faculty of Applied Informatics of the Tomas Bata University in Zlín (FAI) and the software company Edhouse s.r.o., organized a successful event called Girls Day, which focused on supporting female high school students in the field of science and technical professions.

This exceptional event was inspired by an international initiative created at the UN and its goal was to support girls and women in the field of science and technology. The event was attended by almost fifty female students from grammar schools and a business academy from all over the Zlín Region.

“We are pleased to have hosted the event at the FAI premises and to introduce interested women to the importance of technology in today’s world. The audience was able to listen to interesting presentations by FAI employees and view the technological facilities with explanations. We believe that this event will provide students with new knowledge, experience and motivation for the next steps in their careers in the IT field,” said Dean Jiří Vojtěšek before the start of the program.

The entrance ceremony was not without a distinguished guest, the Councilor of the Zlín Region, Ms. Zuzana Fišerová, who welcomed the students to the faculty. She called on them to reject gender stereotypes and emphasized how important it is to increase the representation of women not only in science, but also in the fields of management and politics. According to the Councilor, increasing the representation of women is crucial for society as a whole and can lead to an overall move forward in the world.

The students could look forward to a rich program that included presentations of study fields, summer courses, study abroad offers and activities related to cultural and sports activities in Zlín. Scientists from FAI and IT experts from Edhouse s.r.o. shared with the audience valuable experiences from their own professional careers, which led them to interesting job positions in the academic or commercial sphere. The afternoon part of the program included a presentation by representatives of Edhouse s.r.o. about the projects they are currently working on, with an emphasis on the principles on which these projects operate, as well as presentations of specific job positions in IT or cooperation opportunities for students. There was also an excursion to the FAI laboratories and demonstrations of workplaces in Edhouse s.r.o. so that the students could see for themselves what work looks like in practice.

The packed program allowed the students to at least briefly glimpse the remarkable world of science and information technology, which is full of creativity, innovation and interesting personalities. The aim was to show that technical fields do not have to be the prerogative of men only, but also offer many opportunities for interesting careers to women.
