Duration: 8 semesters (4 academic years)

Admission Process

The admission procedure for doctoral study programs is governed by the Dean’s directive.

How much time do I have?

  • Applications for the admission procedure for the academic year 2026/2027 can be submitted from 1.3.2026 to 31.5.2026
  • The entrance exam will take place in June 2026. The exact date will be specified in the invitation to the entrance exam.

How Do I Apply?

1. CHOOSING A DISSERTATION TOPIC
After studying the above Dean’s directive, the next important step is choosing a dissertation topic. The dissertation topic you can:

    • chozen from the list of currently approved topics and contact the relevant supervisor to see if the topic is still available.
    • prepare your own (If you do not choose from the offered topics, you can contact the supervisor who deals with the issue corresponding to your interest and prepare your own topic in cooperation with him. This step you must  do well in advance so that the new topic can be submitted to the Doctoral Studies Programme Board for approval)

2. APPLICATION AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE DOCUMENTED
Submit an application for studies electronically in the e-application, which is available at the website https://eprihlaska.utb.cz/ .
Do not forget to add all required attachments to the application. For details, please refer to the above-mentioned Dean’s directive, Article 3, Paragraph 4.

Required Attachments:
1) A structured CV of the applicant
2) Proof of previous education
  • An officially certified copy of the applicant’s master’s degree diploma (if you completed your previous education in Czech Republic) 
  • Recognition of previous foreign higher education (if you completed your previous education outside the Czech Republic, more details on the recognition of the previous education are available here)
If you have completed a master’s degree at FAI do not need to submit a documents above.
If you are a student in the final year of your master’s degree, please indicate the expected date of your final state exam and bring a copy of your diploma or written confirmation from the study department to the entrance exam.
3) Transcript of academic results from master’s and bachelor’s degree studies, including the results of state examinations, if these are part of the study programme
It is not necessary to submit a transcript of results for studies completed by the applicant at FAI
4) A letter of motivation (including a description of prior communication with the potential supervisor)
5) Proof of language skills
A certificate of language skills at B2 level or higher (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, e.g. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), First Certificate in English (FCE), Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), City & Guilds – a notarised copy)
Optional, Recommended Attachments:
6) Other documents
Anything supporting the application, e.g. certificates of completion of relevant courses, confirmation of funding, confirmation of involvement in a research project at TBU, etc.

How Much Is It?

The administrative fee for the academic year 2026/2027 is CZK 740 / Euro 30 and is non-refundable at any stage of the admission procedure. If you completed your master’s degree at FAI in 2026, the administrative fee will be waived.

The applicant must monitor the confirmation of payment of the administrative fee in the e-application mode. Within 10 days of payment, the application should be marked as “accepted” in the system. An application marked as “accepted” cannot be changed or canceled; this marking means that the application meets all the required requirements. If the confirmation of payment receipt does not appear in the e-application within 10 days of payment, please contact us at
studium-phd@fai.utb.cz.

What About the Exam?

Invitations to the entrance examination are sent to applicants no later than two weeks before the examination, in writing via the UTB electronic information system.

The entrance examination is conducted in English. As a rule, applicants are required to attend the entrance examination in person. In justified cases, the entrance examination may be conducted remotely via electronic communication, particularly for foreign applicants.
The entrance examination primarily tests the applicant’s readiness for independent scientific work in the chosen programme in the context of broader professional knowledge, and their level of communication in English. The entrance examination consists of two parts:

  • Professional discussion – conducted in the form of an oral interview to assess the applicant’s suitability for doctoral study and their knowledge of the chosen dissertation topic. The interview also covers the applicant’s previous studies and work experience, as well as their motivation for further research.
  • English language examination – conducted in the form of a written test. In justified cases, the examination may take the form of an oral interview. The examination is prepared and administered by a representative of the Language Institute. The English language examination is waived for applicants who are native English speakers.

Further details about the exam are provided in the above-mentioned directive, in Article 5.

What About Results?

The decision on acceptance or rejection to study will be delivered to the applicants in the e-application form via the TBU electronic information system within 30 days of verifying the fulfillment of the admission conditions.
The results of the admission procedure will be published within 15 days after the meeting of the admission committee in the public part of the FAI website (https://fai.utb.cz/en/admission-procedure-results/).

When Can I Enroll For Study?

The date of enrollment in the study will be communicated to the applicants in the decision on admission to study.
